    Stability issues

On the older forum, I posted a thread about memory problems in GIMP that might have been the cause of the crashes.

When run on the terminal, the symptom was something like :
I managed to find a way to debug it despite the launcher. The result of my investigation seems to be that these errors happen in ClearLooks. Therefore, I opened my Gimp.app/Contents/resources/share/themes and removed everything clearlooks-related - error messages seem gone!

Can other people test it, and tell me whether they currently get this error message when running from the terminal, whether removing clearlooks fixes them, whether it gets more stable after removing clearlooks...

    thanks

I'm not doing any terminal magic but I removed clearlooks and didn't had a single crasch (ugly ass hell though).

Okay good. But did you have crashes before? My goal here is to fix crashes so if you were okay before it doesn't help much ;) Many mac users reported that GIMP 2.4 is much less stable than GIMP 2.2 - but apparently only mac users. So maybe the cause of the crashes is in our theme change; at least, the debugger tells me that clearlooks is doing something wrong. But is it causing the crashes? I'd like feedback from many people for this. If you could try the terminal with and without this I'd really appreciate it. Areas that seem to cause the problems are for instance image creation dialog and image resize dialog

If it turns out clearlooks causes crashes (and I'll need people's feedback and help for this...) i propose we switch to a different theme. My current proposition is Afterhours, it's not THAT much different from clearlooks, and did not cause the same memory corruption as clearlooks did on my computer

but before proceeding to changes I'd like some feedback of course

I was NOT okay before :p haven't had the time to really use it though. Just did a test run and it worked. I'm doing some work tomorrow, let's see how that goes. I'll report later!

You don't need to debug anything. Just run it from terminal, with and without clearlooks, and see if you get error messages (or if it crashes of course). I did the debugging

Also, if we switch to a different theme I think I will instead use a modified version of Afterhours... the theme is good but a little blurry, I modified it to be sharper and it looks very good, not very different from clearlooks actually

I can't figure out what you mean there

    Ok :)

Waiting on your feedback for stability, and if positive i'll commit the change to SVN

Maybe pure luck, but it worked just fine.
    No crashes what so ever.

Finally a stable Gimp for OS X!  :D

Well okay I committed the change.

I couldn't test that my modifications to build script work, though (I have a macports build currently building, but guess what, I'm having macports problems, how surprising)

I'd really like that modified afterhours theme since my gimp is looking awful right now. Maybe I could use something similar? How do you install themes? Couldn't find that one in the how-to.

hmm currently have some trouble with dbus after building:

    Code:
    ~/src/macports/Gimp.app/Contents/Resources/bin/dbus-launch ~/src/macports/Gimp.app/Contents/Resources/bin/gimp
Failed to start message bus: Failed to read directory "/tmp/skl/Gimp.app/Contents/Resources/etc/dbus-1/session.d": No such file or directory
EOF in dbus-launch reading address from bus daemon

Andreas: copy the theme to /share/themes and change the gtkrc in /etc/gtk

I don't really know about dbus problems... but my macports is finally building again, so maybe when it's done i could have a look at it (feel free to do so too ;) ) I'd like to fix python too

thanks theonehorst, worked great. My only complaint about Afterhours is that it's a bit too brown. If we could turn down the satiation a bit, that would be great since it would go alot better with the rest of the OS.

where did you get the theme from? If you got it from the GTK-related website it's sure brown; the version I uploaded in our SVN has a slightly modified color theme to be sharper
