Before Tweetie 2 became Twitter for iPhone, and before Twitter, Inc. completely uglified its icon, it had a really nice, glossy-looking one.

I've seen this style used in various other iPhone apps, like VanillaSurf. Does anyone know how this is done, who could put together a little tutorial on how to make a icon similar to it in GIMP?

    Thanks,
    Lex

    Here's a non-carbon version.

minor adjustments have to be made though:

you need to duplicate the bg (the metal thing) and flip it around and male it slightly bigger. put it just behind the icon layer. then add a layer mask stroke from bottom to top.

also add a blur gradient from bottom to top to the icon. Also your gradient is too extreme. If you look at the original it goes from white to grey, not black.

    hope i don't sound like a smartass! :)

What? Why would I change the background? The blur gradient, um, that's a shadow. Also the gradient is almost identical, maybe it's your monitor. ;)

first of all that shadow was not visible in the carbon version

second: yours has more round corners and a shadow taht is way bigger. You gradient is certainly darker.

Yeah the shadow is bigger so the inside shadow matches, I didn't bother fixing the outside shadow. You are right, the corners are a tad rounder on my version. But the gradient's the same on my laptop! ;)
